Scalability of the BitTorrent P2P Application

چکیده
Peer-to-peer (p2p) networks are popular for their improved scalability compared to the client/server architecture. Hereby, the contribution of upload capacity provided by each peer to the network is the basic principle. BitTorrent is a very popular p2p application for file-sharing which is optimized for fast file dissemination. Key component is its tit-for-tat strategy to decide to whom a peer should upload. This means that an upload to a peer depends on the download from that peer. This gives an incentive for each peer to provide upload capacity to the network. This work investigates the BitTorrent protocol with respect to scalability. We present a simplified analytical model for file download and compare simulation results of BitTorrent with it. Furthermore, we show that small changes to the protocol can change performance considerably.

P2P architecture is the next-generation network paradigm to replace the traditional client-server architecture. Typical P2P systems are characterized by the decentralized control, scalability and robustness. Centrally managed storage services, such as Dropbox, are popular for synchronizing data between several devices. P2P-based approaches that run fully decentralized, such as BitTorrentSync, a...

In both academia and industry, peer-to-peer (P2P) applications have attracted great attentions. P2P applications such as Napster, Gnutella, FastTrack, BitTorrent, Skype and PPLive, have witnessed tremendous success among the end users. Unlike a client-server based system, peers bring with them serving capacity. Therefore, as the demand of a P2P system grows, the capacity of the network grows, t...

Among all peer-to-peer (P2P) filesharing systems, BitTorrent rises as the most prominent one. A recent analysis [1] shows that although P2P traffic is slightly declining, but BitTorrent traffic is still on the rise. It is responsible for more than 45-78% of all P2P traffic, roughly a quarter of all Internet traffic. This success has drawn a great deal of research interest on the system. In part...

BitTorrent is undoubtedly the most popular P2P file sharing application on today’s Internet. The widespread popularity of BitTorrent has attracted a great deal of attention from networking researchers who conducted various performance studies on it. This paper presents a comprehensive survey of analytical performance modeling techniques for BitTorrent networks. The performance models examined i...

The fundamental problem with P2P networks is that quality of service depends on altruistic resource sharing by participating peers. Many peers freeride on the generosity of others. Current solutions like sharing ratio enforcement and reputation systems are complex, exploitable, inaccurate or unfair at times. The need to design scalable mechanisms that incentivize cooperation is evident. We focu...
